What does Self-Care look like to you?

Spending some time gathering together the simple pleasures in life is a self-care exercise itself.

My list looks like this, but these are not things I do all the time and there is no set agenda for when they will happen. Some people thrive on ritual and so that works for them, but I prefer things more sporadic, so don’t place too much expectation on myself to have things ticked off at specific time frames:

• Country walks and engaging with the beauty of nature

• Long baths with a good podcast

• Full cleansing ritual and then into clean bed sheets

• Spa day with a friend

• Lying in with breakfast in bed, a good book, the radio or audio book

• A floor-based yoga practice – lots rolling around…

• Supported savasana with lots of bolsters and blankets

• Sitting near water

• Being in the woods

• Playing backgammon

• Doing a jigsaw!

• Taking time to prepare lovely food

• A good cup of tea

• The occasional excellent quality gin and tonic

• Great quality chocolate eaten with a friend who appreciates it in the same manner!

What I love about these is that I realise I can still do so many of these, even during this time of lockdown...

Which self-care routines or practices do you actua

Which self-care routines or practices do you actually keep up and why?

If like me you’ve tried many different fads over the years, you’ll notice that some simply stuck so well we barely even notice they are self-care, whilst others seem an enormous effort set to simply make us feel bad when we don’t keep them up. Identifying what we respond to with ease can help us find and sustain those behaviours that truly nourish us – that don’t set us up for yet another judgmental sense of failure.

Examining these and celebrating their presence in our lives helps us see their value and frees us from constantly seeking the next thing we ‘should’ be doing. We may have got out of the habit, but if we remember we liked and enjoyed them, then picking them back up again need not be a chore.
