What does Self-Care look like to you?

Spending some time gathering together the simple pleasures in life is a self-care exercise itself.

My list looks like this, but these are not things I do all the time and there is no set agenda for when they will happen. Some people thrive on ritual and so that works for them, but I prefer things more sporadic, so don’t place too much expectation on myself to have things ticked off at specific time frames:

• Country walks and engaging with the beauty of nature

• Long baths with a good podcast

• Full cleansing ritual and then into clean bed sheets

• Spa day with a friend

• Lying in with breakfast in bed, a good book, the radio or audio book

• A floor-based yoga practice – lots rolling around…

• Supported savasana with lots of bolsters and blankets

• Sitting near water

• Being in the woods

• Playing backgammon

• Doing a jigsaw!

• Taking time to prepare lovely food

• A good cup of tea

• The occasional excellent quality gin and tonic

• Great quality chocolate eaten with a friend who appreciates it in the same manner!

What I love about these is that I realise I can still do so many of these, even during this time of lockdown...

Not every nervous system experiences the world the same way.

For some people, bright lights feel exhausting.
Noise feels physically painful.
Crowded environments feel impossible to process.
Transitions feel overwhelming, even when they seem “small” to others.

That is not weakness.
And it is not simply “behaviour.”

Sometimes it is a nervous system trying to protect itself from too much input at once.

The more we understand neurodivergent nervous systems with compassion instead of judgment, the more supportive and humane our world becomes.

Join myself and Leo Taylor for a Somatic & Mindful

Join myself and Leo Taylor for a Somatic & Mindful Yoga Week at Grenadine Lodge in Turkey, Sept 28-Oct 5, 2026.

This week-long retreat is dedicated to guiding you to feel calm, connected, restored and rejuvenated within beautiful surroundings.

This yoga hotel is really lovely, with great service and truly lovely staff. The swimming pool is big enough to properly swim with a small bar beside the pool, which also serves snacks and amazing fresh pomegranate frozen juice ‘slushies’. It also has two yoga shalas which overlook a pomegranate field, which is where the yoga sessions will take place and a Turkish tree house where students can relax.

Dalyan village is situated on the small river that joins the lake to the sea and the yoga hotel is situated in the conservation area between the village and the beach. There are hotel bikes you can use for a lovely (and flat!) 10 minute cycle into town. This means you can either completely escape or enjoy this lovely town with beautiful river, cafes and great shopping if you want…. The beach is a 15 minute bus ride or you get get there by river taxi from town – there is turtle sanctuary at one end.

There is a mid-week break (with no yoga) which you could use to either relax by the pool, explore the surrounding areas or even go on one of the amazing excursions – a boat trip, waterfall, amber forests, the ancient temple site of Kaunos and many more!
