About the ingredients...
The herbals
Ashwagandha
Belonging to the same family as the tomato, ashwagandha is a plump shrub with oval leaves and yellow flowers. It bears red fruit about the size of a raisin. The herb is native to the dry regions of India, northern Africa, and the Middle East, and today is also grown in more mild climates, including the United States.
Passion flower
Passion flower is a perennial vine that can be found growing in the south east of America. The intricate flowers are large and have prominent stamens and styles. The leaves, stems, and flowers are used in health supplements. Passion flower extract is also used in food and drinks to add flavour.
German chamomile flower
German chamomile is a herb that is native to southern and eastern Europe. Do not confuse German chamomile with Roman chamomile, which is a different plant.
Lemon balm leaves
Lemon balm is a perennial herb from the mint family. The leaves, which have a mild lemon aroma, are used to make herbal food supplements.
Lavender
Lavender is a flowering plant in the mint family that is easily identified by its beautiful, sweet floral scent. It is believed to be native to the Mediterranean, the Middle East and India, with a history dating as far back as 2,500 years. In ancient times, lavender was used as a holy herb. Additionally, it was often used to freshen up and give a light scent to a variety of personal items, such as clothes and hair.
The amino acids
L-Taurine
Taurine is a type of chemical called an amino sulfonic acid. It occurs naturally in the human body and has many important functions. Taurine is found in high levels in the brain, retina, heart and blood cells called platelets. The best food sources are meat, fish and eggs. The body usually makes taurine on its own, but some people cannot make it and/or choose to source it from their diet or supplements. Breast milk is rich in taurine, but infants who are not breastfed do not get enough taurine and do not have the ability to make it, so taurine is often added to infant formulas. It is also added to the formulas used for tube-feeding in adults.
L-Theanine
Theanine is an amino acid. It is found in tea, as well as in some mushrooms. Theanine comes in two forms - L-theanine and D-theanine. L-theanine is the form most commonly found in tea and supplements. Theanine has a chemical structure very similar to glutamate, a naturally-occurring amino acid in the body that helps transmit nerve impulses in the brain.
5-HTP
5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a chemical byproduct of the protein building block, L-tryptophan. It can be converted to serotonin in the body. It is produced commercially from the seeds of an African plant known as Griffonia simplicifolia.
